Jug of the Month - April

This is a Sylvac jug, pattern number 1580. It might be called Daisy or it might be called Dahlia. It's pretty vile. I rescued it from a charity shop because I have a butter dish in the same pattern. I once decided I was going to become the sort of woman who uses real butter and to achieve this I needed a butter dish. I was inexplicably drawn to this on ebay...

Unfortunately the previous owner had obviously used it as an ash tray and it smells vile as well as looks vile. Win win. As a consequence I never became the sort of woman who uses real butter. A bit of googling reveals that this daisy/dahlia pattern also comes in other vile colours...

Enjoying this combination of colours.

Too close

For once I get lovely perky pyrometric cones instead of dribbly slugs, and I've left them too close to the work. Stuck. Not a good look.

Helpful

This kiln is very helpful and informative. At this point of the firing it was hot.

Change of Blog Address

I've changed my blog address from http//:jopottery.blogspot.com to http//:jocorbettceramics.blogspot.com

Thought the new address would look better on business cards.

But have wiped myself off the top of the google search list! Now when you google me you get my old address, and when you click on it you get a message to say I don't exist. I do....but somewhere else.

My stats show I've gone from about 40 hits a day to 2. And you need to know my new address in order to read this message about my new address. Hmmm.

So not such a good move to fiddle about with things. Never mind.

Missed

I keep pouring liquids near the hole they're meant to go in, but not quite in the hole. This looks very professional. Tonight I managed to empty slip from this mould into my apron pocket. I was aiming for a jug. And missed.

Bit Previous

I have booked a kiln for the end of next week for work that only exists in my head. Bit previous of me? Quite possibly.

Brush On Glaze 2

The claggy jammy brush on glaze turns into a smooth and shiny surface in the kiln. Love the way it breaks on the edges. I'm a happy bunny.

Jugs on Jugs

Distorted long line jug transfers applied to a long line water jug body. It's badly done Robert Dawson really. The edge of the transfer is too distracting. I need to apply the transfer to a black jug, with a section glazed white. Then match the white part of the transfer to the white glaze. What I really want to do is have a bit of a lie down while someone else does that for me.

These are just glaze and transfer test pieces....

Brush On Glaze

Liked these colours for a long time. Very Poole pottery. They are brush on glazes but I didn't feel like a proper third year when using them.. Glazing was a bit like trying to brush on jam. Memories of spending a half term using tile paint to redecorate a bathroom many moons ago. Shiver.

The notes say "apply in a thick layer, set loosely." That's certainly what happened. The lumpy bumpy things are in a test kiln. Not holding out much hope.

Cone Drawings

So much to do. So little time. So spent a while photographing drawings of pyrometric cones. There are some great styles here. They're all very different. I'm quite envious of some of them. Mine are a bit rubbish. And I don't get to draw perky ones very often due to all the overfiring.

Remind Me

If anyone can remember the original purpose behind all this jug making, I'd be grateful for a reminder.

These aren't jugs. Drawing with the clay here. K calls them 'onion rings'....

Triaxial Blend

Here are the results of the triaxial blend Helen Moore did with us. Thanks R for donating cups and getting them glazed.
