Jiq Jaq Blog

Here's a piece written by Jiq Jaq about the jugs they're currently exhibiting.

Joanne Corbett is a ceramic artist currently based in Bristol, after graduating last year from Bath Spa with a BA in 3D design she has since been channelling her pottery talent into crafting these beautiful jugs in utopian hues.
Those of you who are local may have already seen our intriguing window display showcasing the small round bellied vessels of hers, each one unique in size, colour and detail. Corbett light heartedly refers to them as her “impractical jugs” although not to be deterred by the name, they are designed for commercial and domestic use. On their own or as a set they give any space a twist of colour and a flash of vibrancy.

Using porcelain and earthenware clays to achieve the bright, vivid colours, Corbett nurses the clay on the wheel and any marks, lines and ridges on the vessel are stories made by her hand. The imprints on the clay are clues to how the piece was created, showing where the maker touched the work – leaving finger prints, finger trails or pinch marks. The jugs are finished when the wheel is still and one pull is given to make the pouring spout.
Corbett states that her choice of hues were inspired by her 1970s childhood; the oranges, the yellows, the burgundy’s, were all taken from her own memories of domestic ceramics such as an orange Poole Delphis plate and classic Spanish Fantasia tea sets. She says that often the inspiration becomes apparent once the vessel is made, and she recognises the similarity with an object from the past – her subconscious mind reminiscing as her creativity experiments with shape and colour.
Corbett also creates “clay drawings” with ceramic hoops in frames, experimenting with form and space, creating an almost mechanical effect, as if they were clock parts – clogs saturated in colour.
Here at Jiq Jaq we really enjoy the colours of her work and their relaxed and organic forms. The vibrant colours really complement the work of Marilyn Koan’s which we are currently exhibiting.

Googling Myself 2

Been googling myself again....

I was one of the top ten creatives of the week for PSFK back in March....

Jo Corbett

I'll just mention that Claire Palfreyman mentions that I've mentioned her...

And Joanna Woodbridge AS Textiles student saw my work at the RWA...

"In this piece which I saw at the RWA autumn exhibition the artist has created small ceramic pots glazed in yellow and red and displayed them in a mirror triangle. The shapes are similar to the felt bowls that I have made and a similar efect is created because the glaze is seen both inside and outside the vessel. I will try using mirrors to present by piece."

Falling Out With Blogger

My laptop and I have fallen out with Google Chrome and the new improved Blogger, which has made it impossible for me to blog for ages. I think we're now in recovery...but we're still a bit grumpy about it.

Googling Myself

Doing a bit of googling myself, as you do, and came across a mention on this blog...

So here's my blog quoting what they wrote about me on their blog...

brilliant ceramics display - “the triangular space and mirrors reflect the pieces to infinity.”
I loved how this work was displayed, I thought it was so clever. Looking back through Jo’s blog I can see there is an on going development to this mirror idea:
“April 07, 2011 - Been mucking about with mirrors in an attempt to think about how to resolve my clay work. What am I going to exhibit? How will I exhibit? What do I want people to see in my work? What do I want them to think?”
This makes me feel slightly relieved as everyone’s been telling me: “you’ll make it work”, “it will come to you” and “it will come together”. (I haven’t yet believed it)
Jo’s blog has given me a bit of hope, knowing that you don’t need all the answers straight away!

New & Improved

I've been improving my blog with pages (at the top) and labels (at the side). So you can now read all of my Jug of the Month posts in one go, or recap on all my positive thoughts about the Sion Hill library.

Change of Blog Address

I've changed my blog address from http//:jopottery.blogspot.com to http//:jocorbettceramics.blogspot.com

Thought the new address would look better on business cards.

But have wiped myself off the top of the google search list! Now when you google me you get my old address, and when you click on it you get a message to say I don't exist. I do....but somewhere else.

My stats show I've gone from about 40 hits a day to 2. And you need to know my new address in order to read this message about my new address. Hmmm.

So not such a good move to fiddle about with things. Never mind.
